Hope’s Door Honors Volunteers at Annual Dinner

StoneBridge Ranch Ladies Association was honored as civic group of the year. They host an annual fashion show to benefit Hope's Door. Members are pictured at a planning meeting for the fashion show.

Despite an unusually stormy  and cool spring night, volunteers came out in force for the Hope’s Door Annual Volunteer Appreciation and Recognition Dinner, held this year at Gleneagles Country Club in Plano.  For the seventh year, Wal-Mart at Spring Creek and Central Expressway  was the title sponsor of the dinner.

During the event, volunteers were feted for their  service and commitment to Hope’s Door, and volunteers of the year were named.  They enjoyed a festive Mexican buffet  while listening to a  delightful  performance by  The Younger Generations Chorus.  Volunteers also  enjoyed a  performance of “You Raise Me Up”  by solo artist Tyrone Johnson  during  a slideshow of  volunteers in action.

Jean Newman, publisher of Plano Profile Magazine was the evening’s  keynote speaker. She praised volunteers for their service to Hope’s Door and encouraged longtime volunteers to serve as mentors to new volunteers.   She told them to continue to do good deeds and that their service was making a difference in the lives of families in crisis.

Volunteers honored at the event were:  Gail Battista, volunteer of the year; Nancy Madson, volunteer spirit of the year; Monnika Young, outstanding youth; Sharon Merrick, outstanding service; StoneBridge Ranch Ladies Association, civic group of the year; Soroptimist International, civic group of the year; Countrywide Home Loans, corporation of the year; Barrett, Burke, Wilson, Castle, Daffin, and Frappier, L.L.P., corporation of the year.

HUD funding fulfills transitional housing goal

Being able to provide transitional housing to victims of domestic violence has long been a goal of Hope’s Door.  Thanks to funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), that goal is now becoming reality.

With funding from HUD, the Hope’s Door Outreach Family Housing Program is leasing 11 apartments across Collin County to eligible families at the end of their 30-day stay at the shelter.  Clients participating in the program must be referred by shelter staff and meet requirements including establishing a plan for self-sufficiency in nine months, being over the age of 18, and being able to work, volunteer, or go to school.

Once in an apartment, an outreach family coordinator works with each family to provide ongoing services including individual, group and family therapy, parent education, and family mentoring.  To assist clients in attaining self-sufficiency, the coordinator provides resources and referrals for financial planning and budgeting, career development, and child care.

Prior  to  the implementation of this program, shelter clients in need of housing  either incurred the expense of leasing or buying a home,   utilized referrals to  low-cost housing, or moved in  with relatives or friends.  Many times, due to financial constraints or believing they have limited options, clients return to the home they shared with the abusive partners.

Transitional housing will provide clients a longer period of time to put a strong foundation in place that will enable them to make housing decisions based on keeping their families safe and healthy.
