Linda's Journey

"It was as if the counselors held up a mirror to me so that I could suddenly see what my strengths and talents were."

Linda was a severely abused wife and mother who felt powerless to escape the trap of domestic violence. She dropped out of high school at the age of 15 and was brutally battered in several relationships. Her partner's brutal assaults several years ago brought the police, and became a turning point for Linda when officers referred her to Hope's Door.

Safe at the shelter, Linda began to set goals for herself and explore her options with the assistance of a caring, gifted staff and volunteers. "It was as if the counselors held up a mirror to me, so that I could suddenly see what my strengths and talents were," she said. She continued to receive counseling, support, and resource referrals through the organization's one-year aftercare program. Today, Linda has far surpassed her personal goals. She ended the abusive relationship, received her GED, went to college and is now married to a loving, supportive partner. Linda has a challenging position with a community college and gives generously of her time, energy, and insight to help other victims of abuse.
