Domestic Violence and Children
Domestic violence hurts children. Children who witness or are
subjected to domestic violence may suffer serious development,
emotional, and physical consequences. Teenage pregnancy, truancy,
poor school performance, substance abuse, use of pornography, and
food addictions are all problems that children from violent homes
may grapple with. In addition, children who see their parents physically
attack each other are more likely, as adults, to hit their own
partners than those who have nonviolent parents. Studies show that
women from violent homes are more likely to accept violence. Men
who grew up in violent homes are more likely to commit violent
and criminal acts. Statistics reveal that 80 percent of men who
are incarcerated grew up in violent homes.
